Aid in temperature control during casting and minimizing reoxidation of the liquid metal before passing to the final mold. Melting processes ferrous and nonferrous produce different slags. Slag has many commercial uses and rarely discarded. Often is reprocessed to separate any other metal it contains. The remains of this recovery can be used as ballast for the railroad and as a fertilizer. Metal has been used as paving and as a cheap and durable to strengthen the sloping walls of the breakwaters to stop the movement of the waves.
