General description
Heartwood varies from pale pinkish / light red-brown to pinkish-red / dark red, weathering to dark red-brown. Sapwood lighter color, often with grey tinge.
Non-silicanous - generally easy to work.
Not durable to moderately durable - fungi & insect, dry-wood termites, marine borer.
Rate of shrinkage variable. Dries fairly rapid without defects / degrade.
Easy to saw, crosscut, plane, bore & turn.
Produce smooth surface.
Quarter sawn - pick-up grain.
Resin deposits - cause saw problems.
Uses
Economically the most important timber genus in humid Asian tropics.
The most common general utility timber. Light constructional work. Plywood & veneer. Not suitable for pulp.
Light duty flooring, fittings, panelling, ceiling, shelving, interior partitions, joinery, low-grade decking & boat planking, concrete shuttering, musical instruments (organ pipes), coffins, boxes, turnery, plywood, boards.
Heavier grades suitable for medium & heavy construction. Door & window frames, beams, joists, rafters, utility flooring, vehicles bodies, weatherboarding, boat building. Carving, turnery, cabinets, panelling & flooring.
