About Shiraoi
In the 1930s Shiraoi began the cultivation of mushrooms such as Shiitake, and mulletroe (or karasumi) at Kojohama. Shiraoi imported the knowledge of mullet roe production from Iwanai.
Shiraoi has been involved in the harvest of marine products such as the Horsehair crab and konbu. Because of dwindling resources harvesting of hair crab has been reduced to a test operation from middle of July until middle of August.
Shiraoi introduced the raising of beef cattle from Shimane Prefecture in 1954. In 1966 Shiraoi began with the production of chicken eggs. Shiraoi boasts 550,000 chickens and a business worth ¥2.8 billion.
There are many famous local products, such as Shiraoi beef (Wagyu), salted roes of Pacific cod, Shiitake mushroom, and eggs. You can see old styled dance of Ainu (earlier settlers of Hokkaido) at Ainu museum in Shiraoi. The dance was registered by UNESCO as world cultural heritage (intangibles). Also, you can see many kinds of wild birds, (67 species are confirmed in this area) and nine species of mammals, such as fox, Yezo sika deer, and Yezo squirrel.

It is Japanese Black beef, which is raised with the fruits of the northern land in the town of Shiraoi, Hokkaido such as warm climate, abundant nature, and plentiful water, etc., as well as the overflowing love of the producers.
At the "G8 Hokkaido Tokyo Summit", it was used at the Japan-US summit dinner and the luncheon hosted by the prime minister and his wife. It is also highly praised by the world's VIPs. It is a superb item with the natural taste of Japanese beef and a soft meat quality.
