Toughened glass or tempered glass also called hardened glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal float glass. Tempering creates balanced internal stresses which cause the glass, when broken, to crumble into small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards. The granular chunks are less likely to cause injury.

Tempered glass can withstand constant temperatures of 470°F. If tempered glass is exposed to higher temperatures, it gradually weakens the structure of the glass thus making it more susceptible to breakage. If a piece of tempered glass is exposed to continuous temperatures of 600°F or more, the glass will shatter into small pieces.
