Softwood Products:
Our softwood species are used in both structural and non-structural lumber products. To simplify our supply and use of structural softwood lumber, we combine species with similar strength characteristics, for example SPF refers to the Spruce-Pine-Fir grouping. As non-structural products are graded solely on the basis of appearance quality, we usually sell non-structural softwood lumber as individual species for example Western Red Cedar and Douglas fir.
Common species included in our softwood category are Spruce-Pine-Fir, Douglas Fir, Ponderosa Pine, Western Red Cedar and Western Hemlock. The Spruce-Pine-Fir species group makes up by far the largest proportion of dimension lumber since the species in this group grow throughout most of Canada. The other major species groups for dimension lumber are Douglas Fir and Hem-Fir.
With the exception of Economy grade lumber, all our softwood products are seasoned uniformly in dry kilns to a moisture content of 19 per cent or less and are surfaced all four sides (S4S) per NLGA grading rules. Kiln drying inhibits natural staining of the wood, improves its strength and stiffness, enhances its appearance and increases its resistance to decay and attack by insects. Economy Grade is Heat treated only and may contain 19% or higher wet pieces. All products are grade stamped accordingly.
