Standard laminated glass consists of two or more panes of glass that are permanently bonded together by heat and pressure with one or more plastic interlayer of polyvinylbutyral (PVB). Normally clear, both the glass and interlayer can be manufactured in a variety of colours and thicknesses to provide a decorative appearance.

The PVB has no adverse effect on the visible light transmission but absorbs in excess of 99% of ultra-violet light. Laminated glass can perform many functions including safety, security, bullet and blast resistance.
